Constructing a Raised Bed Plastic Tunnel Garden

10/1/2018

Neither our yard space nor our budget has room for a large heated greenhouse, which would make year round gardening relatively easy, instead we use a raised garden bed with plastic tunnel on our side deck.  We love gardening, but our property is located on a very steep hill here in North Georgia.  Needing a sunny location, we discovered that gardening on our deck is easy and convenient to simply walk out of our kitchen, cut a view herbs or veggies and cook them for our family is so rewarding, economical and fun!

Constructing the plastic tunnel over our raised bed will come in handy this fall and winter by allowing us to grow varieties of lettuces that are surprisingly cold-hardy.  Spinach, kale, and other greens are among the different varieties we plan to grow!  The photo below shows how we constructed our plastic tunnel!

Materials needed for a 4-by-6-foot plastic tunnel:
  • One 4 ft. PVC pipe, three 6-foot pieces of half-inch PVC pipe, three PVC joint fittings and six PVC clamp
  • Plumbers glue
  • Heavy, clear plastic (4 or 6 mil) to cover the structure
  • Don't forget to add our Foothills Compost™ or Potting Soil

How well can a garden thrive on solid clay blended with four tons of bulk Foothills Compost™?
How well can a garden thrive on solid clay blended with four tons of bulk Foothills Compost®?  Just take a look at this massive residential garden in Buford, Georgia.  This garden was created on solid Georgia Red Clay, is a thriving masterpiece!

Many gardeners say that it can take years of hard work to improve clay soils.  Yes, there must be a little tilling involved and as much organic matter as possible, but the key is to add a good amendment and we recommend Foothills Compost® which is organic compost created using food residuals and yard/wood trimmings from local businesses. The rich compost improves soil texture, helps the soil retain water, suppresses plant disease and prevents soil erosion in addition to enhancing plant growth. Foothills Compost® is all-natural and all-organic compost derived from 100% recycled organics.

It is perfect for all of your compost needs:
  • 100% natural organic material
  • Reduces amount of recyclable organic material entering our solid waste system
  • Increases value of soil
  • Foothills Compost® is a registered soil amendment with the states of Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Alabama.

By using our product we are able to reduce our carbon footprint by recycling and reusing natural materials.
