Frequently Asked Questions

Food waste is the single most common material sent to landfills in the United States, making up about 24% of landfill waste. When food scraps are buried in landfills, they break down without oxygen and produce methane, a greenhouse gas that is far more powerful than carbon dioxide. In fact, food waste is responsible for about 58% of methane emissions from landfills, making it a major driver of climate change.
Composting changes that. Instead of creating methane, food scraps break down naturally and become nutrient-rich soil that supports plants, gardens, and healthy ecosystems. By composting, we reduce landfill waste, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and return valuable nutrients back to the earth where they belong.

Sign up for the plan that works best for your household. Place your compost bucket on your porch on pickup day, and we’ll swap it for a clean, ready-to-use bin. Your food scraps are then turned into nutrient-rich compost instead of landfill waste.

We accept plant-based kitchen scraps that break down well in our backyard compost tumblers. This includes fruit and vegetable scraps, peels and cores, coffee grounds and filters, tea leaves and tea bags (without plastic), eggshells, bread, rice, pasta, grains, oatmeal, etc. Paper napkins and paper towels used with food scraps are also fine.
-
Because we compost in backyard tumblers, we only accept plant-based food scraps. Please do not include meat, fish, bones, dairy products, oils or grease, or heavily processed foods. We also do not accept pet waste or dryer lint, since many fabrics shed microplastics that we do not want ending up in our soil. If you’re ever unsure about an item, feel free to ask.

We compost the collected scraps in our own backyard, where they are carefully turned into nutrient-rich soil. Our long-term goal is to offer finished compost as a product or membership perk once we are producing enough consistently. We’re excited to grow into that in the future.

Our buckets have secure lids to help prevent pests. Keeping the lid closed and placing the bin in a shaded area can help keep everything tidy. Many customers keep their compost bucket underneath their kitchen sink or in the refrigerator. Regular pickups also reduce the chance of unwanted smells.
